I cannot recall visiting any city in Central America that does not have a central plaza at its hub. Often occupying an entire city block, these plazas are usually lush with trees, ample shade, benches and a decorative fountain.

In East-Central Indiana, the obvious solution to this overstocked situation is a YARDSALE, where one arranges one’s goods on the front lawn and invites strangers to rifle through those belongings while insisting that a nearly new toaster is worth no more than fifty cents rather than the outrageous $1.00 price tag attached to it.

In 2011 during a month-long stay in Antigua, Guatemala, I took advantage of an opportunity to attend what my wife teasingly refers to as “coffee college.” It amounted to three sessions with the master roaster at a local coffee plantation just outside of town.
